Year 12

Democracy and Dictatorship in Italy, 1896-1943

This course covers the demise of democracy and subsequent rise of dictatorship in Italy, from the 1896 defeat at the battle of Adowa to the execution of Mussolini in 1945. The period sees the invention and assent of a new political doctrine. One focused on centralised autocracy, economic autarky, military mite, imperialistic zeal and personal dictatorship. For Italy, this was an era shaped by one remarkable man - Benito Mussolini.
